Beautiful Buildings That Are Made With Marble

Mable is a stone that is timeless, elegant and classic. Its looks have been admired since the Roman and Greek empires that began using the stone as building material. Since then, the stone has become incorporated into many households, cultures and monumental buildings.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa took nearly a century to build, but it turned into one of the most recognized structures in the world. Construction on the building began on August 14, 1173 during a period of Italian military success and prosperity. The tower began sinking in the construction of the second floor because the foundation was built on weak, unstable soil. Luckily, construction was halted due to political unrest, but the tower would have collapsed it that did not happen.  Today, it is a staple of Italian culture and very popular amongst tourist.

The Parthenon
The Parthenon is a temple dedicated to the goddess of love, Athena, who the people of Athens regarded as a patron. Construction of the marble structure began in 444 BBC when the Athenian Empire was at its highest power. It was completed eight years later, with its final touches of decorations finishing in 432 BC. Despite its age, the Parthenon is still regarded as one of the most important pieces of Greek culture and one of the world’s greatest monuments.

U.S. Capitol Building
The original building plan for the Capitol building came through a competition set up by United States Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. He created a design competition in fourth months, with the winner winning $500 and a lot in the Federal City.  Due to the lack of intellectual design, none of the initial designs were chosen, until a late entry by William Thornton caught the eyes of Jefferson in its, “Grandeur, simplicity and beauty,” as said by Washington.  The building began construction in November 1791 and was no fully completed until 1811. In the war of 1812, barely a year after its full completion, the building was nearly burnt to the ground, but reconstruction began in 1815 with its capitol dome being built in 1850. Marble has been a staple in the building, with it even including two bathtubs.
